Here are some models I recommend and use myself when it comes to making portrait-style shots in Stable Diffusion:
These models have served me well when it comes to generating realistic portrait images of human beings.
Another benefit of these models is that they’re so well-trained that you can experiment with various styles such as sci-fi, vintage, analog, and more.
You can discover more checkpoint models on Civitai but the models listed above are more than enough to help you make good portrait images.
Moreover, you can also try SDXL models that are mind-blowing at generating highly detailed images.
Use Negative Prompts
Using proper negative prompts is crucial to ensure that the portrait images you generate look beautiful and don’t have any unwanted artifacts.
Many users new to Stable Diffusion complain that they’re unable to generate images with proper hands, eyes, or legs.
That’s often due to the lack of a good negative prompt that weeds out unwanted details from images.
I typically prefer using one or two negative prompts for my images. For this article, all the example images I generated using the following negative prompt:
text, watermark, low quality, medium quality, blurry, censored, wrinkles, deformed, mutatedThis negative prompt covers all the bad aspects that you wouldn’t want in your generated images. You can also expand on this prompt and add more keywords but it’s often an overkill.
If you still struggle with problems, you can try using negative embeddings instead.
Use LoRA Models
While you don’t have to use LoRA models while generating portraits in Stable Diffusion, they can still be quite helpful if your goal is to achieve a certain style.
For instance, if you want to generate a portrait in analog-style photography, you can use a LoRA model for that. Similarly, you can find models for different styles as well.
You can also find models to add details such as film grain, bokeh, and vignette effects to your photos too.
